Testimonies from the Mavi Marmara PDF Yazdır E-Posta

I have just come back from the hospital where the two dozen injured from the Mavi Marmara are being treated. I met the young men shot in their legs, arms and faces.

Their wives, mothers and loved ones were taking care of them. All of them had a distinct sense of purpose and mission. They were all dedicated to the Palestinian cause. They have internalized the plight of the people of Gaza and demonstrated their pride in bringing their cause to the attention of the global agenda. Despite the frantic efforts of the spin doctors in the US and Israel, the world has made up its mind about the murder of the nine peace activists on the Mavi Marmara.

Furkan Doğan, the 19-year old high school senior -- incidentally a US citizen -- was shot four times in the head and once in the chest. Who could harbor such vengeance against another human being? I do not know, but I am curious about the State Department’s response to the murder and severe beating of US citizens by Israeli commandos on the Mavi Marmara. We hear that Doğan’s family is preparing for a court case in the US.

I spoke to all of the injured except those in the intensive care unit. One by one their accounts of what happened on Monday morning point to the premeditated murder of Turkish citizens by Israeli commandos. And this is exactly what has been registered by all of us. Their accounts also demonstrate that they were not expecting such brutality. It appears they were expecting to be towed to an Israeli port and return home after a few days. Unfortunately, that is not what happened.

The good news is that Turkish prosecutors are collecting all the evidence and recording testimonies from the injured as well as the returning activists. I have no doubt that once their preparations are concluded, court cases against those Israelis responsible will be opened. Turkey continues to be enraged by what happened. The public anger continued with the eight funeral ceremonies that were held. Ministers privately vowed to work effectively towards making those responsible accountable for their crimes committed against our citizens. Members of our opposition parties actually find our responses “too soft.”

Paul Larudee, an American activist stated to Greek cameras that he was severely beaten and subjected to psychological torture by the Israelis. The footage confirmed very much what he had said. Kenneth O’Keefe, an ex-US Marine and Gulf War veteran, said upon his return that he saw five activists killed, one shot in the head. “The Israelis treated us like dogs” was a summary of his recollections of what had happened on Monday morning. Kevin Neish, a Canadian on board the Mavi Marmara underlined that “the harshest treatment was being dealt out to the Turkish people on board.” Burney accused commandos of waiting more than an hour before treating the dozens of wounded, even watching one elderly man bleed to death after being shot.

For the last two days the pro-Israeli spin machine has been aggressively trying to combat the damage done to Israel’s image in the world. Their primary strategy appears to be to delegitimize the Humanitarian Aid Foundation (İHH) and thus cover up the very basic fact that their soldiers murdered nine peace activists -- one of them American. This is all in vain. International public opinion has delivered its verdict. These frantic efforts will only mean something to obvious circles.

Since 1967 Israel has been a prisoner of its military might. As the famous Israeli writer, novelist and journalist Amos Oz noted: “Power has, again and again, intoxicated us. Again and again we imagine that we can solve every problem we encounter with force. To a man with a big hammer, says the proverb, every problem looks like a nail.”

The murder on the Mavi Marmara will lead to a process that will demonstrate to all of us that every problem Israel encounters cannot be solved by force.
