Suat KINIKLIOGLU, AK Party Deputy Chairman of External Affairs was the guest of Remzi Ketenci, Samanyolu News TV Ankara Editor’s “News Ankara” program on the 29th of December 2008 where he discussed the Israel's Gaza Attacks.
KINIKLIOGLU who called attention to the New US administration, the coming elections in Israel and the peace negotiations between Israel and Syria moderated by Turkey discussed the reasons behind the Israeli attacks on Gaza.
KINIKLIOGLU stated that “Israeli attacks on Gaza are assessed as a response to Hamas rocket attacks by official channels which is also stated in the US press. However there are many kind of factors behind these attacks like most of the developments in the Middle East. We mustn’t see these attacks just as a reaction to Hamas' rocket attacks. It indicates the manifestation of the sabotage of hawks in Israel who are against the negotiations between Israel and Syria moderated by Turkey also an explanation of “fait accompli” approach during new US administration.”
“Israeli attacks blocked the peace negotiations between Israel and Syria moderated by Turkey. Our President, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs has pulled serious weight to this process. Israel’s this attitude has showed disrespect to Turkey as President Erdogan said. It doesn’t conform to political gentility and encumbered our mediation endeavors in good faith. This isn’t a case to be forgotten and its reflection on Turkey-Israel relations will be seen.” He added. KINIKLIOGLU who evaluated the Obama's silence on Gaza stated that “There are strong Israel supporters and Jewish lobby that has penetrated all spheres of political life in Washington. I think that Obama doesn’t want to make an explanation before formally taking office which will cause reactions of these groups. Indeed, this situation indicates the structural restrictions in US administrations, no matter who is President. In spite of the fact that Obama emphasis on human rights, freedom and peace, he can’t say what he actually believes. Personally, I believe that Obama wants to condemn these attacks however there are some things restrain him.”
For the question whether the reaction from the international community can be turned into a sanction against Israel, KINIKLIOGLU reported that “It will be difficult to impose a sanction. US has a veto right in United Nations Security Council. We will participate in the decision making process from January 2009. This is an important test for Turkey. As The Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs has said we assume a role for Turkey in UNSC which is predominated by ethical and fair dealings beyond foreign policy interests. I hope Turkey will exhibit the necessary reactions and objections.”
Replying the question whether Israel has used this attack as a tool to ensure the unity in Israel , KINIKLIOGLU stated that “Some irresponsible politicians has used this kind of foreign policy factors to ensure solidarity inside the state in history. These attacks also have a this kind of dimension. Israel is a community divided itself. Ehud Barak called an “all-out war against Hamas”. He didn’t say retaliation or intervention. He used the word of “war”. War means to cease the separatist movements and to unite against outside. Israel’s this attitude can be interpreted as a reflection of conflict and disunion in itself. |
